Fulfilling the Mission

Just like the beacon from a lighthouse, our mission is to be “a source of light in times of darkness”. That can mean something different to each person depending upon the individual need. For families with limited resources, a single crisis can put a family in a situation where they are unable to continue to meet their basic needs. With the support of the community, we are able to keep shining the light of hope.

“Lighthouse Ministries has been a blessing. My family and I were sinking and without the help of Lighthouse Ministries I know we would have drowned. After facing two back surgeries and three hernia operations, being denied disability several times, we thought we had nowhere else to turn. We just knew that we were going to be homeless, but then someone told us about you. Thank God for people like you and all of your help” Mr. L

More than paying a bill

An elderly lady on a fixed income came for help with her electric bill. With the unusually cold winter, she had been struggling to keep the electric from being disconnected. Her husband of many years was very ill and she was trying to keep the house warm for him. In order to continue paying the high electric bill, unknown to her husband, she had cut back on her own prescriptions, taking them every other day instead of every day, jeopardizing her own health.

We assisted with their overdue electric bill and avoided a pending disconnection. As her eyes filled with tears, she said, “Thank you. I knew the Lord would give me a way to work this out.”. Because we were able to help bring their electric bill current, she was able to resume taking her medicine.

Praying for Toothpaste

The Lighthouse Ministries’ participant advocate had just completed an interview with the elderly lady seated in front of her. We were able to help keep her electric from being disconnected, and concluding the interview, the volunteer asked her if she needed some food from our emergency pantry. Her response was “Ma’am, I’m grateful for anything but I’ve been praying for toothpaste”.

Our emergency pantry receives donations of canned and non perishable food, for which we are grateful. We do not usually receive donations of personal items. This day, however, our volunteer went into the pantry to gather a bag of food and on the shelf she found toothpaste, a toothbrush and soap that had been donated. In addition to the food she desperately needed, the woman received the answer to her prayer for toothpaste.
