Reflections

How do you place a value on helping a family have their utilities, or life saving medications for a month? What is the value of assisting a family with children living in their car move into the security of a home? I like to think the value is like throwing a stone into the Pee Dee River. When it hits, the waves ripple out into the water with each wave going a greater distance. Monetarily, having housing, utilities, medications or another basic need for a month can be huge when resources are limited. The relief, security, and hope provided gives families a period of stability to get back on their feet.

We know children who live securely with their basic needs met, have less health problems, do better in school, and are less likely to get into trouble. We know persons who have their medication needs met, are less likely to go to emergency rooms. I believe each person we are able to help through Lighthouse Ministries has new potential for meeting their basic needs in the future, from which the whole community benefits.

In this issue you will see the many individuals, churches, civic organizations and businesses who have supported Lighthouse Ministries. Each of them in their giving has shown they value the Ministries’ ability to be a source of light in times of darkness. On behalf of the participants, board, volunteers, and staff let me say thank you for your investment in others and your partnership in fulfilling the goal of helping all people of Florence County have their basic needs met.
