Beacon Newsletter - Spring 2007
Lakeisha showing emotions of extreme excitement and gratitude received a certificate of completion from the Working Mothers Diaper Program (WMDP), and a fifty-dollar gift card from Target. “Yes! More diapers and things,” she said, as her face glowed when presented with the gift card. She was wearing a smile of radiance as she loaded her diapers, wipes, Dreft detergent, diaper-rash ointment, baby wash and lotion into her car. Wendy, another grateful participant of the WMDP expressed gratitude that needed no words. This was the last time she would receive these supplies: however, she could only express her appreciation to Lighthouse Ministries, for all they had provided her for six months. The program offers Parenting Skills Classes for mothers, at the House of Hope of the Pee Dee, to help reduce the number of first time child abuse victims. Rosemary values the training so that she often walks to class, sometimes having to face the brutal cold to get there, because her vehicle is currently not working. “I lost my mom at an early age so I gather all my questions throughout the week to ask the facilitator because I don’t know. While they may seem like real dumb questions I want to make sure I am raising my children the best way possible. The classes have really helped me to learn that some or most of the stages that my children go through are normal for their age. This has really helped me learn to redirect my anger and view what I thought to be problems with my children’s personalities as strengths. Not having to worry about buying diapers and all the other things the program provides for six months truly has been a blessing. Being a single parent with two children in diapers I don’t know what I would have done without you all,” she stated. These are just a few sentiments of appreciation we have received from participants, since the program started in October, 2006. Lighthouse Ministries through partnership with Children’s Trust Fund of South Carolina (CTFSC), Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina (PCASC), the House of Hope of the Pee Dee and the Junior League of Florence, Inc., wish to help many other families in Florence County share these feelings.
