“Do we have to wear pink?” asked a board member when told the theme for the agencies’ kick-off event for the 2009-2010 Campaign of Hope would be Pink and White. After attending the occasion in August, all agreed wearing pink was a small price to pay to have heard the inspiring words from Ms. Marva Smalls and Dr. C. Edward Floyd as they shared their passion for helping the underserved. Before Dr. Floyd introduced Ms. Smalls, he talked about the growing needs brought on by the crisis in the economy and the important role Lighthouse Ministries plays in responding to increasing numbers of families facing financial difficulties.

Ms. Smalls, a veteran at championing the causes of the hidden and silently suffering of the world, especially children, came from New York to her hometown where she challenged all of us to be partners in keeping the light of hope alive. Keeping hope alive for Ms. Smalls is bringing real change through safety nets of resources and advocating in proactive ways for persons who are unable to have basic needs fully met or rights they deserve. In short, she called for all of us to “walk the walk”. Making a gift of $5,000 to the Campaign of Hope, she encouraged others to join Lighthouse Ministries in being “a source of light in times of darkness."
